Building on Women’s Strengths in D.C.
Calvary Womenās Services empowers homeless women in Washington, DC, to transform their lives through housing, health, education and employment programs. Qlarant Foundation supports the expansion of the Holistic Health Program to serve more women at the new housing program, Reach Up. The program includes personalized case management, life skills and education opportunities, job training and placement services, health and wellness services, on-site therapy and daily addiction recovery meetings.
The Chesapeake College Foundation raises funds for Chesapeake College to enhance learning through the support of scholarships, technology, and programs. The College harnesses the talent and resources necessary for students, employees and citizens of the region to thrive as individuals and as contributors to their communities and to society.
Chesapeake College received a grant of $15,000 to support the development and implementation of a year-long āNavigating Your Healthā workshop series targeted toward the aging population in Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anneās, and Talbot counties. This workshop series will be designed to use the resources and technology available at Chesapeake Collegeās new Health Professions and Athletics Center and experts in the healthcare field to empower the aging population and their caregivers as informed healthcare consumers. This project will contribute to the improvement of healthcare on the Mid-Shore by giving consumers tools for managing their healthcare needs and successfully navigating the healthcare-related situations in which they will find themselves as they age. It will also create opportunities for healthcare providers to work collaboratively to provide important information and education to one of the largest, most healthcare-dependent demographic populations in the region.
Community Free Clinic is a safety net provider for uninsured Washington County residents. The majority of the patients suffer with chronic diseases tied to cardiovascular health. By providing healthcare at no cost to the medically uninsured, the Clinic combats chronic disease, mental health, and other health issues while striving to make the community, as a whole, healthier and stronger. The Clinic also provides reproductive health services to a growing number of teenagers and young adults.
In 1988 the Maryland Dental Association created the Maryland Foundation of Dentistry. The sole purpose of the organization is to facilitate the provision of pro bono dental care for Maryland citizens who are disabled, cannot afford treatment and are ineligible for public aid.
The MFD operates the Donated Dental Services Program. The Program recruits volunteer dentists and dental laboratories to provide services free of charge to adult low-income Maryland residents who are disabled by illness or injury. MFD patient care coordinators act as liaisons between patients and dentists to maximize the volunteersā time and ensure that patients receive needed care and services. Since 1989, over $19 million in free dental care has been provided to approximately 9,800 Marylanders.
Mission of Mercy began operations in the central Maryland/Pennsylvania region in 1994 with the express intention of restoring dignity through the provision of quality healthcare and medications for the sick, poor and homeless. Its mission is to restore dignity and “healing through Love” at mobile clinics, providing free health care and medications.
Qlarant Foundationās grant will support the Mission of Mercyās free mobile dental clinic. The clinic provides fillings and extractions to uninsured and underinsured patients. The patients are predominantly individuals who are not eligible for other free, charitable or sliding scale clinics. Culturally and linguistically appropriate services are provided by a team of community-based volunteers who serve as dentists, interpreters, and administrative and hospitality workers.
Partners in Care, a community-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is committed to enabling older adults to remain independent in their homes and engaged in the community. It is an almost-all-volunteer organization and has provided service to literally thousands of older adults at four sites in Maryland.
A grant was awarded to support the Ride Partners Program in Anne Arundel County. A major component of the program is access to health care. Volunteers use their own cars to provide no-monetary-cost rides for trips to doctor visits, hospitals, pharmacies and other destinations as well as provide other one-on-one, personācentered services to seniors.
Striving to Eliminate Hunger
Talbot County Empty Bowls raises awareness and alleviates hunger and food insecurity in Talbot County. Six out of every ten students receive free or reduced meals. 11% of Talbot County residents are food insecure. The Talbot Hunger Coalition expects numbers to rise in 2024 because of the rising cost of food and inflation of other living expenses. The Qlarant Foundation grant funds operating costs and expenses associated with planning and executing the February 2025 Community Gathering Dinner to raise funds to be distributed to local charities focused on alleviating hunger in the community.
