In 1988 the Maryland Dental Association created the Maryland Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped. The sole purpose of the organization is to facilitate the provision of pro bono dental care for Maryland citizens who are disabled, cannot afford treatment and are ineligible for public aid.

The MFDH operates the Donated Dental Services Program. The Program recruits volunteer dentists and dental laboratories to provide services free of charge to adult low-income Maryland residents who are disabled by illness or injury. MFDH patient care coordinators act as liaisons between patients and dentists to maximize the volunteersā€™ time and ensure that patients receive needed care and services.Ā Since 1989, over $19 million in free dental care has been provided to approximately 9,800 Marylanders.
