Staff shares information about QIO operations and Prospective Payment System

Columbia, MD—June 20, 2013—Delmarva Foundation for Medical Care (DFMC), the federally-designated quality improvement organization (QIO) for Maryland, welcomed five visitors from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service of Korea along with Mr. Jay Merchant, MHA, International Relations Advisor for the Department of Health & Human Services, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (DHHS/CMS). “The primary mission of the delegation was to have detailed information about the Medicare Prospective Payment System (PPS) from the Center for Medicare at CMS,” said Mr. Merchant. “In order to accomplish this, they planned the visit to learn about the role of the QIO in working with the hospitals that use the PPS.” Senior staff from DFMC provided briefings on the various functions of the QIO and answered questions from the visitors.

Members of the delegation included: Chun Hye Young, Head of Department, DRG Planning Department; Kim Hea Jung, Deputy General Manager, DRG Operation Division 1; Kim Mi Sung, Assistant Manager, DRG Operation Division 2; Kim Nam Young, Section Chief, Quality Assessment & Development Department; and Song Hee Young, Section Chief, Classification System Planning. Mr. Keebyum Han translated for the meeting.

“This was a wonderful opportunity for us to share information and learn from each other,” said Dr. Columbus Giles, DFMC Medical Director. “They have a system similar to the Medicare diagnosis-related group (DRG) system. However, their system has only 10 DRGs and they are looking to expand that number and implement a quality program.”

DFMC and Delmarva Foundation of the District of Columbia (DFDC) are the QIOs for Maryland and the District of Columbia and are subsidiaries of Quality Health Strategies, Inc. (QHS)—headquartered in Easton, Maryland. QHS is a national leader in innovative strategies improving health services and systems.
