Elizabeth (Betty) M. Hewlett, Esq.

Elizabeth M. Hewlett, Esq. has practiced law and been a public servant for more than 44 years. She retired as Chairman of the Prince George’s County Planning Board and The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), the first African American and first woman to serve in this position.

A former principal at Shipley, Horne, and Hewlett, PA, Ms. Hewlett has practiced law in both the public and private sectors and is licensed to practice in Maryland, the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, and before Federal Courts and the United States Supreme Court. She remains active in several bar associations and served as 2-term President of the J. Franklyn Bourne Bar Association. She has also served on numerous multi-jurisdictional boards and committees, including the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, and as a U. S Presidential Appointee to the National Capital Planning Commission.

Energetic and actively engaged, Ms. Hewlett also serves/has served on numerous state and local public boards, as well, including the Maryland State Board of Law Examiners, Catholic Charities DC, Federal and State Court Committees, Gubernatorial Commissions, and is grateful to have been recognized for her extensive service. She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and currently serves on the sorority’s National Council of Legal Advisors. A firm believer in “To whom much is given, much is required,” she continues to mentor youth & young lawyers, support her community and numerous charitable organizations, and most of all, to pay it forward wherever she can…

Ms. Hewlett is a graduate of Tufts University, Boston College Law School, the Kennedy School of Government Executive Program at Harvard University and is a Class 5 Graduate & Life Member of Leadership Greater Washington.
